The Newspaper in Education program was established in 1966 to bring newspapers into the classroom – helping teachers enrich learning by exposing students to current events, community issues, geography, technology, history, art and much more.

Newspapers are available to teachers at a discounted rate. In addition, The Honolulu Advertiser provides, at no cost to participating NIE teachers, curriculum guides, training, a monthly newsletter, guided class tours and special supporting materials to assist in the use of newspapers in the classroom. NIE also sponsors several annual events including the High School Journalism contest and the Honolulu Advertiser Spelling Bee, affiliated with the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee.

How can you help support NIE?
There’s a great way for companies, organizations and individual citizens to support literacy and earn a tax deduction. Support NIE through a sponsorship, partnership or personal donation – and your donation will be used to purchase newspapers for our schools. Our goal at The Honolulu Advertiser is to offer the program to every school in Hawaii (public schools, private schools, adult education programs and occupational centers).
